Pakistan Advances to Final as India Forfeits Legends Semifinal
The highly anticipated semifinal clash between India and Pakistan in the World Championship of Legends has been cancelled. The match, scheduled for Thursday, July 31st, in Birmingham, was scrapped after the Indian team refused to compete against their rivals. Sources close to the tournament promoters have confirmed that Pakistan has been awarded the victory and will proceed to the final.
This decision echoes a similar incident during the league stage, where the Indian team declined to play against Pakistan, specifically citing their objection to Shahid Afridi's presence in the Pakistan squad.
The situation unfolds amidst heightened tensions and anti-Pakistan sentiment within India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has faced scrutiny for agreeing to host the Asia Cup, a tournament that could potentially feature multiple encounters between the two nations. Furthermore, recent events, including "Operation Sindoor" in response to a terror attack, have contributed to the strained relationship.
Earlier in the week, a key tournament sponsor, EaseMyTrip, announced its withdrawal from the match. The company stated: "Despite entering into a 5-year sponsorship agreement with the World Championship of Legends (WCL) two years ago, our stance has always been clear - EaseMyTrip will not be associated with or participate in any WCL match involving Pakistan."
EaseMyTrip further emphasized its unwavering support for the Indian team, clarifying, "We proudly continue to support the India Champions and stand firmly by our team. However, as a matter of principle, we do not support or promote any match that includes Pakistan. This position was communicated unambiguously to the WCL team from the beginning. EaseMyTrip supports Team India, but will not engage in any match featuring Pakistan."
The India Champions team boasts prominent players such as Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Stuart Binny, Shikhar Dhawan, Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, and Piyush Chawla. Dhawan had previously reinforced his position against playing Pakistan in a social media post.
The India Champions secured their semifinal berth by defeating the West Indies on Tuesday. The other semifinal features South Africa and Australia, also scheduled for Thursday.
