Jasprit Bumrah's participation, or lack thereof, in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series has been a subject of much discussion. Limited to just three of the five Tests, a decision made to protect him following a back injury, his absence has raised questions about the team's strategy.

With the series hanging in the balance at The Oval, and India only having bowled once in Manchester, expectations were high for Bumrah to feature in the decisive match. However, he remained absent, having already played his allocated three games.

Ten Doeschate Defends Bumrah's Selection

India's batting coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, addressed the concerns, describing it as a "complex issue." He refuted the notion that Bumrah was selectively choosing matches. "He did say he was going to play three games. He left it up to us which three he played. We've tried to manage the situation," ten Doeschate stated.

Despite missing games, Bumrah's impact has been undeniable. He has secured 14 wickets in three matches, including two five-wicket hauls, maintaining an average of 26. His performance places him second only to Ben Stokes in the series' wicket-taking rankings.

However, these three games have seen him bowl 119.2 overs, a significant workload, especially considering the generally flat pitches. India's reliance on him is highlighted by the fact that he has bowled nearly 40 overs per Test, only 19 overs fewer than Mohammed Siraj, who has been consistently utilized throughout the four Tests.

Managing Workload and Honoring Commitments

Ten Doeschate emphasized the importance of respecting Bumrah's physical condition. "We obviously want to wheel him out, but we also want to respect where his body's at," he explained. "And on the basis of that, we just felt that it wasn't worth including him in the squad [XI for the Oval Test]."

He further elaborated that the decision was made to honor the initial agreement that Bumrah would only be available for three games. "But if you look at the loads, he has bowled a lot of overs. And like he did say coming into the tour, he was going to be available for three games. And we just felt it was right to honour that call."

Ten Doeschate also shed light on the intricate decision-making process involved in selecting the three Tests for Bumrah. For example, despite a week-long break and India trailing 0-1, Bumrah was rested for the second Test, playing at Lord's instead.

Impact on Team Dynamics

The management is trying to balance the need to win with Bumrah's workload.

"It's not ideal. I guess giving those guys attention, the guys who aren't playing, particularly when you're carrying 18, is important," he said. "Make them know that you're making all the decisions in good faith, in the best interest of the team."

Chris Woakes Suffers Potential Shoulder Dislocation

In related news, England is dealing with a potential injury concern of their own. Chris Woakes sustained a suspected shoulder dislocation on Day 1 at The Oval. He will undergo scans to determine the extent of the injury.

The incident occurred while Woakes was fielding. After chasing a ball, he landed awkwardly and clutched his shoulder in distress. His absence could significantly impact England, especially given his contributions with both bat and ball.

"I don't know too much about it, but it doesn't look great," Gus Atkinson said. "It's a big shame, last game of the series, and when anyone gets injured, it's a shame. I'm hoping it's not too bad, and whatever it is, he'll get full support from everyone."
