Taijul Islam, the prominent left-arm spinner for Bangladesh, has declared his willingness to captain the Test team if the opportunity arises.
This announcement comes after Najmul Hossain Shanto's departure from the captaincy, triggered by disagreements with the board following his removal as ODI captain. The search for a new leader has led to various names being considered to fill the void.
While Shanto holds the highest winning percentage among recent captains with 28.57% (4 wins, 1 draw, and 9 losses in 14 Tests), figures like Shakib al Hasan (21.05%) and Mushfiqur Rahim (20.58%) have also held the position.
Although Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been appointed as the ODI captain, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is reportedly inclined to appoint separate captains for different formats.
Taijul, a consistent presence in the Test playing XI, presents a viable option due to his extensive experience.
"I believe it's crucial to empower the captain and value their insights, as team unity thrives on faith in leadership. With my experience, I am confident in my ability to lead if given the chance. It's not about personal ambition," Taijul stated in a recent interview with Cricbuzz.
He further added, "The essence isn't the allure of the captaincy, but rather the vision a captain holds for the team. It's about setting a clear goal and charting a course for the team's progress over the next couple of years. This vision should be shared by the team management and officials."
"If the opportunity arises, why not embrace it?" he concluded.
Since the 2021 Sri Lanka series, Taijul's bowling economy has improved, demonstrating tighter control and effectiveness, particularly in overseas conditions where he was previously prone to being expensive.
Taijul acknowledges that his improved pace variations have significantly enhanced his effectiveness, attributing this development to a deeper understanding of his game.
"Several factors contribute to this. Age plays a role; with experience, you gain better control over your deliveries. The experience of playing Tests overseas is invaluable. The more you play, the better you perform. It's challenging for newcomers to excel immediately. Players need time to develop. Thankfully, I've had that time and have improved steadily," Taijul explained.
He further elaborated on the significance of pace variation, stating, "Pace variation is crucial. Mixing slower and quicker deliveries can disrupt the batsman's rhythm. Similarly, bowling two balls at the same pace, one turning and the other going straight, poses a significant challenge. The world's best spinners master this art. They might bowl deliveries at similar speeds, but with different trajectories, making it incredibly difficult for batsmen."
