Portugal set to hand Diogo Jota's number 21 kit to his close friend Ruben Neves

Portugal will pay a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota by handing over his iconic No. 21 jersey to his close friend and former teammate Rben Neves. National team coach Roberto Martinez confirmed the move on Friday while announcing his first Portugal squad since Jota’s tragic death in a car crash last month.

On July 3, a tragic car accident in northwestern Spain claimed the lives of 28-year-old Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva. The incident sent shockwaves through the football community, sparking emotional tributes from clubs, players, and supporters worldwide.

Neves, currently playing for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, shared a long journey with Jota through Portugal’s youth sides, FC Porto, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. He was also a pallbearer at Jota’s funeral, underlining the deep bond between the two.

Martinez explained that passing on the shirt was a symbolic gesture to keep Jota’s memory alive every time Portugal steps onto the field.

“Diogo’s absence unites us even more. He wanted to win the World Cup, and we want to honour his dream. The No. 21 shirt will now be worn by Rben Neves, someone who had a special connection with him,” he said in a press conference.

“Every time we step onto the field, we carry Diogo’s energy. Passing the number 21 to Rben is our way of ensuring that his brave spirit continues to inspire every touch, every run, every goal,” he added.

Jota last represented Portugal in the Nations League final victory over Spain in June. Since his passing, Liverpool have permanently retired his No. 20 jersey, while clubs and former teammates continue to honour his legacy.

Portugal will kick off their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign against Armenia and Hungary on September 6 and 9. The squad includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Joo Flix—and now, carrying more than just a number, Ruben Neves.
